What If?!? Monday Mock Draft 2/8/2010
by Cecil Lammey on 02/08/10What if the Rams passed on Ndamakung Suh? What if eight Offensive Tackles were selected in the first-round like back in 2007? Check back every Monday leading up to the draft for my new “What If!?!” mock draft!
1. St. Louis - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame - The Rams pass on Suh because they believe a young franchise quarterback is more important for the direction of the team. Clausen is not the tallest QB, but the Rams are hoping he can develop into a Drew Brees-like
player.
2. Detroit - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska - The Lions head coach Jim Schwartz nearly jumps out of his chair when Suh falls to them. Schwartz will use Suh as his new Albert Haynesworth, and the Lions get a 10-year anchor to their defense.
3. Tampa Bay - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma - Tampa Bay must choose between Eric Berry and McCoy, and they decide to go with the big Defensive Lineman. McCoy and Roy Miller should give the Bucs a strong front line.
4. Washington - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State - Some people expect Mike Shanahan to select a quarterback with the first pick for his new team. Shanahan believes he can make Jason Campbell work if he’s better protected. With Chris Samuels future up in the air, Okung makes a lot of sense because he can play either Left or Right Tackle.
5. Kansas City - Eric Berry, CB/FS, Tennessee - Berry is very versatile, and will provide the Chiefs with much needed playmaking ability in the secondary.
6. Seattle - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers - New head coach Pete Carroll considers a Quarterback here, but knows their offensive line needs a serious upgrade with Walter Jones retiring. Somewhere Matt Hasselbeck is smiling.
7. Cleveland - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma - Mike Holmgren knows that neither Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson have the accuracy to run the type of offense he’s implementing in Cleveland. Bradford will need to check out medically at the Scouting Combine, and is hyper-accurate.
8. Oakland - Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida - The Raiders love to take extremely athletic playmakers and turn them loose on the defensive side. Dunlap should show off his extreme athleticism at the Underwear Olympics aka the Scouting Combine.
9. Buffalo - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa - Buffalo would have selected a quarterback if Bradford or Clausen had fallen that far. Instead they go with Bulaga because his performance in the Orange Bowl caused him to rise up their draft board.
10. Denver (from Chicago) - Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee - Josh McDaniels doesn’t want his defense to wear down as they did last year. Williams teams up with former college teammate (and one of Denver’s first-round picks last year) Robert Ayers to strengthen their front seven, stuff the run, and create more pressure on the Quarterback.
11. Jacksonville - Tim Tebow, QB, Florida - The worst kept secret in the league comes true when Jacksonville selects Tebow. They hope he is the savior to the franchise, as season tickets increase and Tebow jerseys fly off the shelf.
12. Dolphins - Ricky Sapp, DE/OLB, Clemson - Joey Porter wants out, and Jason Taylor is no spring chicken. Bill Parcells likes Sapp, and believes he can use him to rush off the edge.
13. San Francisco - Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland - The 49ers want their ground game to be stronger, and they know an upgrade to the offensive line is necessary.
14. Seattle (from Denver) - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - With Carroll’s second pick he goes with the best wide receiver in the 2010 NFL Draft. T.J. Houshmandzadeh is not a number one wideout, but will greatly benefit from the rookie’s presence.
15. New York Giants - Earl Thomas, FS, Texas - Teaming up Thomas with Kenny Phillips should help the Giants defense create more turnovers and lower the number of big plays allowed.
16. San Francisco (from Carolina) - Taylor Mays, FS, USC - Mike Singletary was impressed with what he saw from Mays at the Senior Bowl, and knows his team needs an enforcer in the defensive backfield.
17. Tennessee - Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama - Jeff Fisher is amazed McClain falls this far, and doesn’t hesitate to turn in his draft card. McClain is versatile enough to play Outside Linebacker if the team needs him to transition out there.
18. Pittsburgh - Mike Iupati, OG/OT, Idaho - The Steelers need to do a better job of protecting Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and Iupati can play either guard or tackle. Iupati should also help the run game be more dominant, especially in short yardage situations.
19. Atlanta - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State - Once upon a time the Falcons selected an athletic playmaker from Florida State. Robinson is no Deion Sanders, but he should improve a secondary that got burned way too often in 2009.
20. Houston - Dominique Franks, CB, Oklahoma - Dunta Robinson is an unrestricted free agent, and never quite lived up to his draft status. Franks has good strength and athleticism which should help when they play a high powered passing offense like their division rival the Indianapolis Colts.
21. Cincinnati - Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame - The untimely passing of Chris Henry really affected what the Bengals could do through the air. Tate reminds many in the scouting community of Anquan Boldin because of his strong run after the catch ability.
22. New England - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma - The Patriots know that Tom Brady needs more weapons around him, and they love what Gresham can do in the passing game. He should be a good replacement for Ben Watson, who is likely to leave through free agency.
23. Green Bay - Charles Brown, OT, USC - Chad Clifton’s knees can’t hold out much longer, and the Packers need to protect franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Brown (an athletic former Tight End) should fit in immediately in Green Bay’s zone blocking scheme.
24. Philadelphia - Jonathan Dwyer, RB, Georgia Tech - The Eagles drafted LeSean McCoy last year to be the eventual replacement to Brian Westbrook. Now they feel Dwyer will make a nice “power” complement to McCoy’s electric ability.
25. Baltimore - Brandon LaFell, WR, LSU - The Ravens are looking for a big wide receiver to help out Joe Flacco and the passing game. LaFell has the size and speed they feel will help stretch the field, keeping the defense honest and utilizing Flacco’s great arm strength.
26. Arizona - Vladmir Ducasse, OT, Massachusetts - With Kurt Warner retired the Cardinals are going to be more of a “ground and pound” team with Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower leading the way. In order to have a stronger run game they need to upgrade the offensive line.
27. Dallas - Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida - The Cowboys need some youth at Inside Linebacker because veteran Keith Brooking is slowing down. Spikes will bring instincts and aggression to the second level of their defense.
28. San Diego - C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson - The Chargers know they can’t rely on Darren Sproles to carry the entire load for their ground game. Spiller should be their feature back, with Sproles continuing his change of pace role.
29. New York Jets - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma - Rex Ryan will continue to pound the rock on the ground, and Williams is the best run blocking tackle in this draft class. He can also play guard if the veteran line gets a little banged up.
30. Minnesota - Derrick Morgan, DE/OLB, Georgia Tech - The Vikings love to get after the quarterback, and Morgan should fit in nicely as a pass rusher off the edge.
31. Indianapolis - Everson Griffen, DE, USC - The Colts came to the painful realization in the Super Bowl that they needed more pass rushing help if Dwight Freeney is injured. Griffen is an athletic playmaker that could realize his full potential on a veteran team like the Colts.
32. New Orleans - Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State - The Super Bowl champions are looking for a young upgrade from Kendrick Clancy, and Odrick fits the bill.
